For many families, navigating a child’s mental health journey can feel like a maze — daunting, emotional, and often isolating. But for Dr. Gisèle Chando, what began as a long and challenging road ultimately led to a place of hope, structure, and transformation through Alexander Youth Network.
Nine years ago, Dr. Chando’s world shifted when her son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). What followed was an emotional rollercoaster of early interventions, school suspensions, and mounting challenges — particularly with emotional regulation and social adjustment. While her son showed academic promise, his daily struggle with self-control and sensory overload made school a constant source of tension. Frequent meltdowns and miscommunications pushed the family to the brink.
As a mother and advocate, Dr. Chando tried everything she could. But nothing fully addressed her son’s needs — until they were referred to Alexander Youth Network’s Day Treatment program.
“We were found eligible to enroll, and though we weren’t sure how it would go, we were willing to give it a try. We had been through several suspensions by that point. This referral was most welcome.”
At Alexander Youth Network, the shift was immediate. The structured environment, compassionate counselors, and evidence-based therapy provided something that had long been missing: consistency and support. Dr. Chando’s son thrived in the program — learning essential skills like self-regulation, impulse control, and emotional coping strategies.
The Day Treatment program also supported Dr. Chando as a parent. From consistent communication to daily feedback and collaborative care, she was empowered to become an even stronger advocate for her child. It was, as she describes, “a point of reset” for their entire family.
“Day Treatment provided the structure and environment he needed to excel. Having great counselors who were patient, compassionate, and attentive — a bonus. For us, it was a blessing.”
Dr. Chando’s journey is a powerful reminder that behind every diagnosis is a child — full of potential, curiosity, and heart — and a family doing their very best to support them. With the right care, children can learn, grow, and thrive. And parents like Dr. Chando don’t have to walk that path alone.
At Alexander Youth Network, stories like hers fuel our mission to provide healing and hope for every child who walks through our doors.
