Alexander Youth Network has been chosen as one of the local nonprofits that will receive donations from the Charlotte Checkers’ annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Novant Health. This long-standing tradition will take place on Saturday, November 29 at 4 p.m. during the Checkers’ home game against the Toronto Marlies. Each year, fans fill the arena with new stuffed animals that are tossed onto the ice after the Checkers score their first goal, creating a heartwarming moment that symbolizes community care in action.
This event is more than a fun tradition. The stuffed animals collected are shared with children across the Charlotte region who are served by organizations that offer support, stability, and healing. Alexander Youth Network is honored to be included alongside Baby Bundles, Alliance Center for Education, Bright Blessings, Hugaroo, Inc., and The Salvation Army.
Why This Matters for the Children We Serve
Many of the children and families who come to Alexander Youth Network are navigating emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. While our programs focus on therapeutic care and long-term growth, small gestures of comfort can have a meaningful impact. A stuffed animal can serve as something familiar to hold during transitions, appointments, or moments when the world feels overwhelming. It can become a reminder that they are seen, supported, and valued.
Receiving these donations helps create those moments of comfort. It also strengthens our ability to connect with children on a personal level as they begin or continue their care journey. These soft, simple gifts can become anchors in times of uncertainty.
The Power of Community Support
The Teddy Bear Toss is an example of what can happen when a community comes together for a shared purpose. Thousands of fans participate each year, and each stuffed animal represents one person choosing to show care. That collective generosity reflects the heart of Charlotte. It shows children that they are part of a community that wants them to feel safe and supported.
This type of support also encourages our staff and care providers. It reminds them that there are many hands and hearts working alongside them as they carry out the daily work of helping children heal and grow.
