When Demestrius Williams first walked through the doors of Alexander Youth Network in 2020, the world was in crisis. The pandemic had upended routines, strained communities, and left families and children navigating an uncertain reality. But for Demestrius, stepping into this work during a time of collective anxiety was not a coincidence. It was a calling.

ā€œI’ve always had a passion for people, and I wanted to be a part of shaping future leaders,ā€ Demestrius said.

What began as a desire to serve others quickly transformed into a mission that would change not only the lives of the youth he supports but his own as well.

A Role That Found Him

Demestrius never planned to work in behavioral health. But some roles do not come from plans. They come from purpose.

ā€œI think this work chose me,ā€ he reflects. ā€œI always knew I’d work with people, just not in this capacity. I’m grateful it turned out this way.ā€

Today, Demestrius serves as a Residential Coach and Lead Behavioral Health Counselor. He is the calm in the storm. The steady presence guiding both children and staff through some of the most emotionally demanding moments of the day. His leadership is not about hierarchy. It is about heart.

ā€œI make sure my team is set up for success,ā€ he explains. ā€œWe focus on clear communication, support each other during crisis moments, and always operate with therapeutic intent. Whether it’s helping a child regulate their emotions or encouraging a colleague, it all matters.ā€

Leading With Love

For Demestrius, the foundation of everything is love. It is in the quiet moments, offering a listening ear, walking alongside a child through a difficult day, or simply showing up with compassion, that Demestrius makes his greatest impact.

ā€œI lead with love. Children can feel that,ā€ he says. ā€œI give them space to speak freely, to be themselves without judgment. That’s how trust is built.ā€

It is in the quiet moments, offering a listening ear, walking alongside a child through a difficult day, or simply showing up with compassion, that Demestrius makes his greatest impact.

Demestrius is also a strong advocate for his team, lifting up their voices and creating a culture of care. In a role that demands so much, he pours into others with purpose. Some of the most meaningful moments do not happen in the hallways or therapy rooms. They come weeks or months later in a phone call or a thank you message from a parent or social worker.

ā€œGetting a call after a child has beenĀ discharged just to say thank you. That’s powerful,ā€ he shares. ā€œTo know that something I said or did made a difference. That keeps me going.ā€

His Advice to Others

What keeps him showing up every day with energy and empathy?

ā€œSeeing people smile just because I’m here,ā€ he says. ā€œKnowing I’m making a difference. I’m trying to do what God wants me to do.ā€

It is a simple motivation but a profound one. In a world where it is easy to grow weary, Demestrius shows up with faith, humility, and strength. Every single day. When asked what advice he would give to someone starting in this field, his answer is clear:

ā€œDo it because you have a passion for making a child’s life better. That passion is what carries you.ā€

He admits the work is not always easy. But the children? They are worth it. And each day brings something new, a fresh lesson, a challenge, or a moment of joy.

ā€œTo whom much is given, much will be required.ā€

That is the verse Demestrius carries with him from Luke 12:48. A reminder of the responsibility he holds and the deep purpose behind his work.

At Alexander Youth Network, people like Demestrius are the reason hope lives here. His story is a testament to what happens when compassion meets commitment and when someone decides to be the difference in a child’s life. We are grateful for the light he brings to our community and the way he turns every moment into a chance to help someone breathe a little easier.
